Spurn Bird Observatory Sightings March 2022
With so many birders covering the Spurn area it is always helpful for us to get as many records submitted to us as possible. Please try to send in sightings on the same day so we can get them added to the log.

Overcast with rain from mid morning and cold in the increasing F2 SE to F4/5 north easterly. Watches: 0700-0900, 1240-1640.
The day saw few observers out and about being cold and wet, and overall very few migrants were seen the best of those being 3 Black Redstart plus a Wheatear and a White Wagtail with 17 Pied Wagtail in the triangle, 51 Redwing, 4 Chiffchaff and a Brambling.
There was very litlle over the sea a close in Minke Whale the best of the sightings.

Overcast with light rain showers and a F2 southerly. Watches: 0650-1005.
Migrant wise there was still a small scattering over the area with totals of 2 Woodcock, 5 Chiffchaff, 10 Blackbird, 4 Fieldfare, 137 Redwing, 2 Song Thrush, 8 Black Redstart, a Wheatear, 16 Pied Wagtail, a White Wagtail, 12 Chaffinch, 4 Brambling and a Siskin with at least 1 Siberian Chiffchaff still at the sewage works.
There was very little over the sea the best 127 Common Scoter and a Black-throated Diver.
Sightings from the Kilnsea wetlands area included the Whooper Swan, 22 Shoveler, 12 Gadwall, 2 Tufted duck, a Goldeneye, 6 Little Egret and 7 Black-tailed Godwit. A Pale-bellied Brent was on the Humber and 3 Pink-footed Geese in well field.
Ringing: 7 Blackbird, 18 Redwing, 1 Robin, 1 Great Tit, 2 Chiffchaff, 4 House Sparrow, 1 Brambling, 1 Chaffinch, 2 Linnet, 3 Goldfinch, 2 Greenfinch, 1 Reed Bunting. (43 of 12 species).

Overcast start with sunny periods later and a light F2 south easterly. Watches: 0700-1000.
There was little diversity on the migrant front but some decent totals the best being the 11 Black Redstart (Sammys, sandy beaches, 5 southfield farm. 4 Point) plus 2 Wheatear, 10 Chiffchaff and 3 Goldcrest. The Cetti's Warbler at the Point was still pressnt and while thougtht to be last years bird, it was apparently confirmed from sonograms of the last 2 years, as each male has a distint song pattern.
It was another day with very little on the move, a Shelduck, 2 Teal, a Tufted Duck, 24 Common Scoter, 3 Red-throated Diver, 11 Cormorant, 9 Jackdaw. 6 Rook, 3 Alba Wagtail and 3 Yellowhammer were about the best.

A warm sunny day with a F1 south easterly. Watches: 0630-1015.
The trickle of migrants arriving and departing through the area continues with today seeing 4 Black Redstart, a Hooded Crow and another 340 Redwing plus 3 Woodcock, 2 Snipe, the Cetti's Warbler, 9 Chiffchaff, 3 Goldcrest, the male Ring Ouzel, a Fieldfare, 3 Brambling and 5 Siskin.
It was another day of quiet vismig the best being a Sparrowhawk, 2 Common Buzzard, 52 Black;headed Gull, a great count of 40 Magpie, 12 Rook and a Corn Bunting. Full counts on Trektellen.
The Whooper Swan remained on KIlnsea wetlands area along with 2 Tufted Duck, a Goldeneye and 2 Short-eared Owl.

A misty start gave way to a lovely sunny day with a light F1 south easterly. Watches: 0645-1015.
There was a big increase in grounded migrants, mainly Thrushes which headed off north west. Totals for the day comprised of 765 Redwing, the male Ring Ouzel still in Clubleys, 3 Black Redstart (inc a male), 4 Woodcock, 3 Jack Snipe, a Cetti's Warbler again at the Point, 9 Chiffchaff, 3 Goldcrest, 32 Blackbird, 17 Fieldfare, 3 Song Thrush, 31 Chaffinch, 2 Brambling, 2 Redpoll and 18 Siskin.
Apart from the Thrushes there was little on the move with just 22 Jackdaw, 11 Rook, 7 Carrion Crow, 2 Alba Wagtail, 2 Meadow Pipit, 1 Chaffinch, 2 Siskin and 2 Reed Bunting.
Elsewhere the Black Brant was at Sammys with a Pale-bellied Brent and 523 Brent Geese, the Whooper Swan On Kilnsea wetlands, a Spotted Redshank over the Humber and a Kingfisher in Corner field.

Misty/foggy start clearing to a lovely sunny day with a F2 south easterly. Watches: 0700-0900.
The day was similar to the previous with a small scatter of migrants around the area, a Firecrest around Kew, the male Ring Ouzel again on Clubleys along with 10 Chiffchaff, 2 Goldcrest, 12 Blackbird, 6 Redwing, 10 Chaffinch, 3 Brambling and 4 Siskin plus the Black Redstart again at the gas terminal.
Around the Kilnsea wetlands area were a Whooper Swan, 19 Shoveler, 13 Gadwall, 5 Avocet, 37 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Red-legged Partridge and a Short-eared Owl.
Ringing: 2 Redwing, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Blackbird, 1 Robin, 1 Firecrest, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Chaffinch, 2 Greenfinch, 1 Siskin.

Hazy sunshine with a F2 south easterly. Watches: 0645-1015.
There was a decent scatter of migrants around the area, the male Ring Ouzel again on Clubley's. a Cetti's Warbler singing at the Point, another good count of 15 Chiffchaff, 3 Goldcrest, 1750 Starling, 22 Blackbird, 8 Song Thrush, 25 Chaffinch, a Brambling and 6 Siskin.
It was hard work for the vismiggers with just 7 Jackdaw, 6 Rook, 3 Crow, 240 Starling, 6 Alba Wagtail, 6 Chaffinch, 4 Linnet and 2 Goldfinch.
The usual good birding around the Kilnsea wetlands area recorded a Pale-bellied Brent, 1 Whooper Swan, 33 Shoveler, 229 Wigeon, 53 Black-atiled Godwit, 2 Ruff and a Short-eared Owl.
Ringing: 1 Starling, 1 Great Tit, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Goldcrest, 4 House Sparrow, 1 Greenfinch, 1 Siskin.

Sunny spells with a F2 easterly. Watches: 0640-1400.
Overall little change but the first male Ring Ouzel of the spring came in/off settling in the triangle with a Ruff, 2 Woodcock, a White Wagtail, 7 Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 2200 Starling, 13 Redwing, 2 Song Thrush, a Stonechat and 2 Brambling as back up, along with the usual Black Redstart at the gas terminal.
The best of the sea was an Iceland Gull heading south while overland a Great Spotted Woodpecker, 14 Jackdaw, 3 Rook, 3 Carrion Crow, 495 Starling, 3 Alba Wagtail and 15 Siskin were a poor return.
Elsewhere the Whooper Swan on Easington straight and 6 Avocet and 56 Black-tailed Godwit on Kilnsea wetlands.
Just outside the area the Black Brant was at Skeffling along with a Pale-bellied Brent among 338 Brent Geese.

A sunny but chilly day with a F4 south easterly. Watches: 0745-0930.
The Firecrest remained around the Kew and churchyard area, but few migrants were about otherwise with 3 Chiffchaff, 2000 Starling, a Fieldfare, 12 Redwing, 1 Brambling and 6 Siskin with the Black Redstart still at the gas terminal.
The best of the day for the vismigers was just 6 Jackdaw, 7 Rook, 7 Carrion Crow, 45 Starling, 8 Chaffinch, 14 Linnet and 35 Siskin.

Bright and sunny with a F2-4 south easterly.
The first Firecrest of the spring was around the Kew area, a ringtail Hen Harrier at Kilnsea wetlands, the Black Redstart was again at the gas terminal and 2 Brambling in Easington. Overall little else was seen with 3 Chiffchaff and 2 Siskin the best of other migrants.
Outside the area the Richard's Pipit was still at Welwick.
Ringing: 1 Redwing, 1 Blackbird, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Firecrest, 5 Chaffinch, 1 Reed Bunting.

Bright and sunny with a F2 south westerly. Watches: 0645-1110.
There was a small increase in migrants and another morning with a trickle of south bound Passerines. The best of the day was a Hawfinch at the Warren which carried on south plus a Stock Dove, 7 Jackdaw, 10 Rook, a Carrion Crow, 2 Skylark, 170 Starling, a Dunnock, 1 Grey Wagtail, 5 Alba Wagtail, 10 Chaffinch, 6 Linnet, 13 Siskin, 6 Yellowhammer and 2 Reed Bunting.
The ringtail Hen Harrier was still about the area and a good total of 15 Chiffchaff, along with a Woodcock, 1100 Starling, 31 Redwing, a Black Redstart at the point, male Wheatear at the gas terminal and 2 Brambling.
Other sightings included a Barnacle Goose on Holderness field, 1 Whooper Swan and 64 Black-tailed Godwit on Kilnsea wetlands and 23 Pintail at Sammy's.

Blue skies with F3 south westerly. Watches: 0640-0915,
Sightings from the day included some first for the year with 2 Garganey on the Borrow pit (joint earliest) and 2 Sand Martin here also which then flew south, while other sightings included a Lapland Bunting over the Riverside, a Black Redstart at the Point, 1 Whooper Swan and a White Wagtail on Easington straight.
There were a feew bits on the move with 9 Jackdaw, 7 Rook, 6 Carrion Crow, 670 Starling, an Alba Wagtail, a Rock Pipit, 32 Chaffinch, 2 Greenfinch, 6 Linnet, 33 Siskin, a Yellowhammer and 2 Reed Bunting.
Outside the area the Richard's Pipit was still at Welwick where a Great White Egret was present.

Overcast with persistent rain in the afternoon and a light F2 south easterly. Watches: 0700-1000.
Sightings from the morning before the rain set in were a Black Redstart on the rocks at Easington gas terminal, a White Wagtail at the Warren, just 2 Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 1 Fieldfare and 14 Redwing, while the best of slim pickings for the vismigers saw 10 Jackdaw, 41 Starling, an Alba Wagtail, 62 Chaffinch. a Greenfinch and17 Linnet flew south.
Just outside the area the adult Black Brant again at Skeffling and the Richard's Pipit at Welwick.
Ringing: 1 Moorhen, 4 Redwing, 2 Blackbird, 1 Blue Tit, 2 Great Tit, 1 Siskin.

A fine sunny day with a light F3 south easterly. Watches: 0645-1015.
The vismiggers were in action again with another largely varied morning including 3 Eider, a Great Crested Grebe, 9 Cormorant, a Curlew, 1 Snipe, 66 Black-headed Gull, 2 Stock Dove, 68 Jackdaw, 6 Rook, 7 Carrion Crow, an Alba Wagtail, 59 Chaffinch, 25 Linnet, 8 Goldfinch, 81 Siskin and 6 Reed Bunting.
There was a small increase in some migrants bringing the first Wheatear of the spring to KIlnsea wetlands while Thrushes were still well represented in the area with 3 Woodcock, 28 Blackbird, 2 Fieldfare, 42 Redwing, 3 Song Thrush, 3 Rock Pipit, 3 Goldcrest, 14 Chiffchaff, 2 Brambling and 20 Chaffinch plus the Siberian Chiffchaff was again at the sewage works.
Other sightings included a Pale-bellied Brent at long bank, a ringtail Hen Harrier at Easington lagoons and just outside the area a Richard's Pipit at Welwick.

A lovely sunny day with a light F2 sourth westerly. Watches: 0645-1015.
It was a nice day out in the field and again a decent morning for the vismiggers which also saw the springs first (and Spurns earliest ever) Little-ringed Plover on Long bank and a Jay wandering the area. Moving also were 30 Jackdaw, 21 Rook, 13 Carrion Crow, 6 Skylark, a Mistle Thrush, 25 Tree Sparrow, 4 Alba Wagtail, 6 Meadow Pipit, 3 Rock Pipit, 24 Chaffinch, 2 Brambling, a Bullfinch, 1 Greenfinch, 2 Goldfinch, 13 Siskin, 2 Yellowhammer and 3 Reed Bunting.
It was also a good day for migrants particulalrly Thrushes staging before their journeys back to the continent with a Woodcock, 3 Snipe, 2 Chiffchaff,a Goldcrest, 81 Blackbird, a Fieldfare, 41 Redwing, 7 Song Thrush, a Grey Wagtail and 3 Brambling.

Sunny spells and a F4 southerly. Watches: 0700-1100.
It was another good, but not spectacular morning for overland movement (with quite a few birds seen arriving in/off) with 2 Lapwing, 19 Jackdaw, 3 Rook, 4 Skylark, 52 Starling in/off, a Blackbird, 5 Alba Wagtail, 14 Meadow Pipt, a Rock Pipit, 215 Chaffinch, 2 Brambling, 10 Linnet, 3 Goldfinch and 19 Siskin. The best of the sea was a Shoveler, 3 Tufted Duck, an Eider, 2 Common Scoter and 3 Gannet.
There was a nice selection of grounded migrants with 3 Woodcock, 4 Chiffchaff, 6 Goldcrest, 32 Blackbird, 3 Fieldfare, 47 Redwing, a Continental type Stonechat and a Snow Bunting.
Ringing: 11 Blackbird, 1 Redwing, 2 Song Thrush, 1 Starling, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Blue Tit, 1 Great Tit, 2 Chaffinch, 1 Greenfinch.

Sunny spells and a F4-5 southerly. Watches: 0645-1210.
Its was a decent day for the vismiggers with some decent overland movement involiving a 5 Jackdaw, 1 Meadow Pipit, 2 Redwing, 3 Linnet, 112 Siskin, 25 Goldfinch and 5 Chaffinch, while the best of the sea was 3 Eider, 2 Teal, 19 Gannet, 39 Red-throated Diver and 32 Dunlin.
Other sightings included 6 Whooper Swan onto Kilnsea wetlands at dusk, a Merlin at the Warren, 1 Kingfisher in the triangle, 4 Chiffchaff in the area, a Snow Bunting at the Point and a Stonechat.

Sunny start clouding over with light rain showers and a F4-6 south easterly. Watches: 0710-1010.
Kilnsea wetlands held most of the decent sightings and counts with the Black Brant present again among 450 Brent Geese, 10 Gadwall, 12 Shoveler, 600 Wigeon, 10 Teal, a Jack Snipe and 39 Black-tailed Godwit.
There was a small increase in Thrush numbers throughout the area including 3 Fieldfare, 47 Blackbird, 4 Redwing and 4 Song Thrush, while the first Merlin for a while was blogging around the area.

A sunny start, clouding over with a F4-6 south easterly. Watches: 1400-1600.
The best of todays sightings were centred around the Kilnsea wetlands area with 30 Greylag Geese, 11 Gadwall, 600 Wigeon, 2 Little Egret and 24 Black-tailed Godwit.
Other sightings included a Great Crested Grebe and 77 Black-headed Gull south over the sea and 26 Chaffinch around the area.

Sunny spells with cloud building and a cold F5-6 southerly.
A Red Kite flying south was the highlight of the day with just a Grey Wagtail and 3 Linnet going the same way.
The Kilnsea wetlands area held around 500 Brent Geese, 22 Shoveler, 9 Gadwall, 770 Wigeon, only 10 Teal, a Marsh harrier, 2 Avocet and 6 Black-tailed Godwit.

Mostly cloudy with a F4-6 south easterly. Watches: 0650-1005.
The first Black Redstart of the spring was a welcome sight at the Point (upto 3 had wintered at the gas terminal). The usual Siberian Chiffchaff was still at the sewage works and 10 Snow Bunting were blogging around the area. Otherwise there was little change.

Sunny spells with a cold 2-4 south easterly. Watches: 0700-1000.
It was another nice day to be out and about the Siberian Chiffchaff still hanging on at the sewage works, a Hen Harrier wandering the area, 160 Pintail and a Kingfisher at Sammy's, with 507 Wigeon, 22 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Avocet at the wetlands.
On the move over the sea were 2 Eider, 156 Red-throated Diver, a Great Northern Diver, 4 Gannet, a Great Crested Grebe, 38 Kittiwake, 40 Guillemot, a Razorbill and 64 Large Auk sp.

A bright and sunny spring like day with a cool 3-5 north easterly. Watches: 0700-1015.
It was a nice day out and about, with maybe the first north bound Chiffchaff of the spring at Kew, while the day also saw a southbound Red Kite and 24 Snow Bunting wandering the area.
On the move were 3 Eider, a Piintail, 92 Red-throated Diver, a Great Northern Diver, 8 Gannet, 62 Kittiwake, 41 Herring Gull, 14 Guillemot, a Razorbill and 87 Large Auk sp while overland 2 Common Buzzard, 2 Marsh Harrier, a Rock Pipit and 4 Meadow Pipit.
The 2 Black Brant were up in the Holderness field area along with a Pale-bellied Brent and at least 1 Hybrid Brant among 350 Brents with a Short-eared Owl nearby.

Generally overcast with showers and a cold 4-6 northerly. Watches: 0700-1000, 1100-1300..
A busy day again with the work party in Corner field busy with footapths etc so little birding was done but a Water Pipit was a good sighting from the borrow pit before flying south.
The sea was given the once over in the morning the best of it being 3 Wigeon, an Eider, 16 Common Scoter, 31 Red-throated Diver, 80 Gannet, 34 Kittiwake, 49 Common Gull, 34 Guillemot and 72 Large Auk sp.

Overcast with a F2-3 easterly. Watches: 0650-1005, 1430-1615,
Very quiet today, on the move were 2 Pintail, 11 Common Scoter, 43 Red-throated Diver and 2 Gannet, while elsewhere 90 Fieldfare and 12 Redwing at Easington cemetery with a Chiffchaff nearby at the sewage works and 60 Tree Sparrow in the area.
Just outside the area 2 Black Brant east of Skeffling along with 4 Pale-bellied Brent, a hybrid Brant among 500 Brent Geese and 25 Whooper Swan.

Overcast grey day with a F2-3 easterly. Watches: 0700-0900, 0930-1200.
A bit of a poor day with little on offer with only the sea having anything of note, 2 Eider, 22 Red-throated Diver, a Fulmar, 1 Gannet, 3 Common Scoter and 6 Large Auk sp.

A nic espring like day, blue skies and a light F3-5 north easterly. Watches: 0700-1015.
It was a day of some limited movement over sea and land with a Shelduck, 5 Common Scoter, a Goosander, 48 Red-throared Diver, 12 Cormorant, 2 Gannet, a Kittiwake, 4 Guillemot, 14 Large Auk sp, 3 Rook, 7 Jackdaw, a Skylark and 3 Greenfinch.
Elsewhere there were 2 Pale-bellied Brent, 21 Shoveler, 2 Tufted Duck and 17 Black-tailed Godwit in the Kilnsea wetlands area, a Mediterranean Gull on the Humber, 2 Siskin at Kew and 2 Snow Bunting wandering between the breach and the Warren, while the nice weather brought a Tortoiseshell butterfly out onto the wing at the wetlands..
Ringing: 1 House Sparrow, 1 Chaffinch, 3 Greenfinch, 1 Siskin, 1 Goldfinch.
