Celebrating young birding talent as part of Spurn Migration Festival (MigFest)
Martin was closely associated with Spurn and MigFest, where his enthusiasm, knowledge and generosity inspired birders of all ages. He firmly believed that the future of birding depended on supporting and encouraging the next generation, helping young birders develop their skills, confidence and passion for the natural world.
The competition forms an important part of Spurn Migration Festival (MigFest), bringing together talented young birders from across the UK. Since its inception, it has provided opportunities for participants to test their identification skills, develop their fieldcraft and spend time learning from some of the country's most experienced birders.
Many former finalists have gone on to become active contributors to the birding and conservation community, reflecting Martin's belief that investing in young people is one of the most important ways to secure the future of birding.
Today, the competition continues to celebrate Martin's legacy by encouraging young birders to learn, develop and share their enthusiasm for birds and migration.
Apply NowThe Martin Garner Spurn Young Birder Competition is open to birders aged 16 and under and takes place as part of Spurn Migration Festival (MigFest).
Six finalists will be selected to take part in the final, with three places available in each age category:
• Under 14
• 14–16
The final will take place on Saturday 12 September 2026 at Spurn Migration Festival.
Finalists will enjoy a morning of birding across some of Spurn's most exciting birding locations, accompanied by experienced birders and members of the competition team. Assessments take place on a one-to-one basis and are designed to be both challenging and enjoyable.
The competition includes a range of activities, including:
• Bird identification challenges
• Fieldcraft and birding skills assessments
• Migration and distribution questions
• Time spent birding with experienced observers
The morning concludes with a buffet lunch and prize-giving ceremony.
Winners in each age category will receive an outstanding prize package, including binoculars and memberships to a range of leading birding organisations and publications. All finalists will gain valuable experience and create lasting memories at MigFest.
