Spurn Bird Observatory Sightings June 2025
With so many birders covering the Spurn area it is always helpful for us to get as many records submitted to us as possible. Please try to send in sightings on the same day so we can get them added to the log.

Monday, 30 June 2025
Another hot muggy day with little cloud but a nice F4 north west breeze. Watches 0630-1000.
A similar day to the previous with the ponds area yet again dominating the proceedings holding 7 Lapwings, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, a Common Sandpiper, single Green Sandpiper, 38 Redshanks, a Greenshank, 92 Dunlin, 130 Little Terns, 50 Sandwich Terns, 25 Little Gulls, 15 Mediterranean Gulls, 500 Black-headed Gulls and a Yellow-legged Gull.
Any passage was again light with just 172 Common Scoters, 98 Swifts, 181 Sand Martins and 15 Swallows.

Polite reminder for all visitors: the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds is extremely vulnerable to disturbance. PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY from the fenced area of beach, which is clearly signposted, and respect the wardens on duty. Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.
Hot and humid with some cloud from time to time and a nice F4 south west breeze. Watches 0630-1050.
A quiet day with not much happening the best of the sightings again in the ponds area with a Tufted Duck, 25 Avocets, 42 Black-tailed Godwits, a Common Sandpipers, single Greenshank. 140 Little Terns, 57 Sandwich Terns, 1040 Black-headed Gulls and 14 Mediterranean Gulls.
Some light movement saw another 21 Black-tailed Godwits fly south plus 42 Sand Martins, 8 Swallows and 2 Siskins.

A very hot day with some high wispy clouds with a stiff F4 north westerly breeze very muggy. Watches 0630-1010, 1345-1515.
It was a great day of movement for Waders particularly 350 Black-tailed Godwits which arrived in/off onto the wetlands with birds regularly heading off south from the flock. The ponds area also attracted a Tufted Duck, 45 Avocets, 3 Little-ringed Plovers, 2 Common Sandpipers, 46 Redshanks, a Greenshank, 30 Knot, a Curlew Sandpiper, 83 Dunlin, 130 Little Terns, 10 Little Gulls, 45 Mediterranean Gulls, a Caspian Gull and 5 Little Egrets.
Other Waders on the move saw 2 Curlews, a Green Sandpiper, 8 Redshanks and 112 Dunlin in or south. Also moving were 117 Swifts, 340 Sand Martins, 44 Swallows, 6 Crossbills, 6 Manx Shearwaters and 47 Gannets.

Another windy F6 westerly with some sunny and cloudy spells more overnight rain. Watches 0630-1000, 1120-1150 1300- 1430-1545.
A quiet seawatch was brought to life with a north bound Cory's Shearwater with not much else bar 10 Manx Shearwaters and 33 Gannets.
The ponds area had a record equaling 48 Avocets, 22 Black-tailed Godwits, a Curlew Sandpiper, 30 Sandwich Terns, 4 Little Gulls, 45 Mediterranean Gulls and a Caspian Gull.

Overnight rain again with a stiff F5 west wind and variable amounts of cloud. Watches 0630-1850.
It was agood varied day around the area with improved vismig and the ponds area having some extra bits of interest. The best of the day sin the ponds area saw a Garganey, 23 Teal, a Pochard, 37 Avocets, a Curlew Sandpiper, 15 Little Gulls, 750 Black-headed Gulls, 15 Mediterranean Gulls, 3 Caspian Gulls and a Grasshopper Warbler.
On the move 1889 Swifts, 11 Lapwings, 3 Manx Shearwaters, 290 Sand Martins and 9 Swallows. Full counts on Trektellen.

Polite reminder for all visitors: the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds is extremely vulnerable to disturbance. PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY from the fenced area of beach, which is clearly signposted, and respect the wardens on duty. Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.
Rain overnight left cloudy skies which brightened up later on with a moderate F3 north westerly breeze. Watches 0430-1000.
Almost a repeat of the previous day with light southerly movement and the ponds area having good totals. The best of the totals included 39 Black-tailed Godwits, a Curlew Sandpiper, 87 Dunlin, 150 Little Terns and an adult Yellow-legged Gull.
Over the sea 13 Golden Plovers, 3 Whimbrels, 13 Curlews, a Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Knot, 8 Dunlins, 48 Kittiwakes, 150 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Puffins, a Red-throated Diver and 4 Fulmars whilst the best overland were 53 Swifts, 43 Sand Martins and 11 Siskins.

A very windy day a F6 north westerly with frequent showers and the occasional sunny spell, feeling rather muggy. Watches 0440-1000, 1400-1430.
The days best sightings were from the ponds area where there was 41 Avocets, 28 Golden Plovers, 2 Little-ringed Plovers, 5 Lapwings, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, a Snipe, 5 Redshanks, a Spotted Redshank, 6 Knot, a Curlew Sandpiper, 57 Dunlin, 170 Little Terns, 10 Little Gulls, 10 Mediterranean Gulls and a 3cy Caspian Gull.
There was some light movement mainly over the sea which saw 13 Golden Plover, 3 Whimbrels, 12 Curlews, a Black-tailed Godwit, 8 Dunlin and 59 Gannets head south along with 4 Siskins.

Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.
A much cooler day with overnight rain and a stiff F5 west wind and some sunny spells. Watches 0515-1030 1400-1700.
There was a nice selection of Waders in the area particularly in the wetlands area where there were 5 Lapwings, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, a Snipe, 20 Redshanks, a Spotted Redshank, single Greenshank, 15 Knot, a Curlew Sandpiper and 75 Dunlin and 23 Grep Plovers, 5 Golden Plovers and 23 Curlews on the Humber. Also in the ponds area 10 Teal, 36 Avocets, 2 Little Gulls, 220 Black-headed Gulls, 4 Mediterranean Gulls and an adult Yellow-legged Gull.
Some southbound movement again saw 672 Swifts, 11 Curlews, 6 Manx Shearwaters, 40 Gannets, 3 Spoonbills, a Red Kite and 21 Siskins counted.

Another hot day with a few showers about and rain overnight, with a increasing F5 south west - west wind. Watches 0610-1855.
A good day of movement saw 2 Bee-eaters head south the first in the early morning tracked down the Lincs coast and the second late afternoon, the day having totals of 3 Shovelers, 3286 Swifts, 2 Red Kites, 2 Hobbies, a Lapwing, 22 Curlews, a Redshank, 270 Sand Martins, 12 Swallows, 9 House Martins and 5 Siskins. The counters at Numpties also had a Vagrant Emperor lingering in the area.
The ponds area had 2 Roseate Terns visit the beach on and off during the morning, a nice early addition to the yearlist while the Spotted Redshank remained along with 8 Black-tailed Godwits and 5 Little Gulls.

A hot day with the threat of storms which did not produce much rain just a light dusting, with the F3 south easterly wind picking up later on. Watches 0630-1000, 1615-1645.
The second Marsh Warbler of the year was singing in the area late afternoon into the evening while the Spotted Redshank remained at Kilnsea wetlands where there are now 31 Teal, a Common Sandpiper, single Greenshank, 35 Sandwich Terns, 4 Little Gulls, 259 Black-headed Gulls and 15 Mediterranean Gulls.
Some light movement saw 3 Crossbills, 105 Swifts, 20 Sand Martins and 17 Starlings head south. Full counts on Trektellen.

Hot and sunny but clouding up from time to time with a light south west breeze. Watches 0630-1000.
The wetlands area moved back to the for with a breeding plumage Spotted Redshank visiting the Humber, a 3cy Caspian Gull and Yellow-legged Gull plus 2 Little-ringed Plovers, 35 Avocets, 6 Lapwings, 140 Little Terns, 18 Sandwich terns, 2 Little Gulls and 14 Mediterranean Gulls. The summering Redwing put in another appearance at the warren as did the Corn Bunting both flying off north.

Another warm sunny day with light south easterly winds. Watches 0555-0900.
The late spring continues with todays offering a female Red-backed Shrike at the warren then in little hedge with a Corn Bunting also here before heading back north. Other bits saw a Water Rail along the canal, Little Grebe on beacon ponds and 166 Black-headed Gulls and 2 Mediterranean Gulls on Kilnsea wetlands.

A warm sunny day with little wind or clouds. Watches 0550-1000.
The day saw a singing Marsh Warbler in Easington with no location released as is Spurn policy for some rare occasional breeders. There was not much else of note but a Redwing was at the Warren and a Willow Warbler in Kilnsea was late. The ponds area held 15 Black-tailed Godwits an increase on the previous day and Curlews reached 25 on the Humber as females returned from the uplands.
The best of any movement saw a Puffin, 34 Sand Martins and 3 Siskins head south.

A bright and sunny and warm with a light wind. Watches 0615-1000.
The day saw very little of note a lingering Redwing in Easington taking the plaudits in that respect. Other sightings saw a Tufted Duck, 5 Lapwings, 15 Avocets and 7 Black-tailed Godwits around the wetlands while some light south bound action saw 187 Swifts, 191 Sand Martins, 27 Swallows, 4 House Martins, 45 Starlings, 2 Chaffinches and 2 Siskins recorded.

A bright and sunny day with high clouds fairly warm with a moderate F4 south westerly breeze. Watches 0615-1000.
The days best sightings saw 4 Crossbills fly south while both Coal Tit and Treecreeper were at Kew while in Insect news Spurns 4th Lesser Emperor was on canal scrape along with several Red-veined Darters. The ponds area held all the usuals with 2 Shovelers, 8 Gadwalls, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, a Snipe, 140 Little Terns, 2 Arctic terns, 3 Common Terns, a Little Gull and 2 Mediterranean Gulls.

Slightly cooler than the previous day with a few light showers and an increasing souh easterly wind, dropping off later. Watches 0530-1200.
It wa quite a decent day with several highlights with 2 Spoonbills and 2 Common Cranes heading south the morning also having 26 Canada Geese, 4 Pochards, 346 Swifts, 6 Cormorants, a Red Kite, 56 Sand Martins, 36 Swallows, 12 House Martins, 110 Starlings, 2 Alba Wagtails, 14 Chaffinches and 6 Goldfinches.
A Nightjar along the canal path flew into little hedge but was not seen again while as usual the ponds area had a few bits to offer with the 2 Brent Geese, 22 Avocets, 3 Little-ringed Plovers, 6 Lapwings, 4 Whimbrels, 120 Little Terns, 10 Sandwich Terns, a Little Gull and 4 Mediterranean Gulls.
A Norfolk Hawker was by canal scrape hide in what is becoming almost annual now.

Overnight rain petered out by dawn leaving lengthy sunny spells and light winds picking up to a F4 south easterly later. Watches 0645-1015, 1030-1130, 1445-2015.
The day saw some more southerly movement producing another Bee-eater which continued without lingering, a decent total of 1192 Swifts, 3 Hobbies, 48 Sand Martins, 20 Swallows, 10 House Martins and 4 Siskins.
The Cattle Egret was still present around the area upto the wetlands where there was also 3 Little Gulls and 5 Mediterranean Gulls.
A Scarlet Tiger Moth found at the Warren was a 1st for Spurn.

The hottest day of the year with some high hazy clouds and light south easterly winds. Watches 0635-1035.
The day saw some movement to keep the vismiggers happy and ultimately brought the bird of the day with a Pallid Swift flying south among a small total of 139 Common Swifts heading the same way. There was also 7 Sand Martins, 15 Swallows, 5 Alba Wagtails, 2 Chaffinches, 4 Crossbills and 2 Siskins. The best of the sea thoughwere just 36 Common Scoter and a Manx Shearwater.
A Cattle Egret ligered for the whole day around the area from the triangle to the wetlands where a Caspian Gull, single Little Gull and 5 Mediterranean Gulls were also present. On the Humber the 2 Brent Geese were still present plus a Greenshank and 10 Redshanks while a Corn Bunting was by the gas terminal.

A bright became rather hazy with an increasing F6 south eaterly wind. Watches 0620-0900.
A much quieter day with a Little Stint and Spoonbill on Kilnsea wetlands plus 6 Shovelers, 8 Gadwalls, a Wigeon, 9 Teal, a Tufted Ducks and 5 Mediterranean Gulls. On the Humber 2 Brent Geese remained.

A much brighter day with an increasing F5 south easterly wind. Watches 0620-1000.
A Hawfinch was a suprise June visitor to Kilnsea then headed north while the best of the other sightings were from the ponds area including 10 Teal, 3 Black-tailed Godwit, 111 Little terns, a Common Tern, 20 Sandwich Terns and 5 Meditreranean Gulls.
There was aslo some light movement over sea and land with 12 Canada Geese, 3 Barnacle Geese, 5 Manx Shearwaters, 21 Gannets, 5 Sand Martins and 11 Swallows.

Cloudy with a stiff F6 north westerly breeze with just the odd shower or sunny spell calming down later on.
A Quail at the point was another addition to the yearlist singing a the point and a Crossbill was in Kilnsea while the Ruddy Shelduck was still on the Humber. There was little else with few observers in the area.

A damp breezy F5 north west start with some sunny spells and some showers. Watches 0530-0900 1640-1820.
The Ruddy Shelduck remained on the Humber with 2 Brent Geese and the 'Limosa' Black-tailed Godwit on Kilnsea wetlands where 2 Mediterranean Gulls were also present.
Over the sea a Tufted Duck, 85 Common Scoters, 13 Sandwich Terns, 46 Kittiwakes, a Puffin, 37 Razorbills, 57 Guillemots, 26 Large Auk sp, 2 Red-throated Divers, a Fulmar, 12 Manx Shearwaters and 58 Gannets.

Showers or longer spells of rain during the day, with just a glimpse of the sun with a light F3 north westerly wind. Watches 0630-1000.
The best of the day was a late Wood Sandpiper on Kilnsea wetlands with the same area also holding 8 Teal, 4 Little-ringed Plovers, a Black-tailed Godwit, 218 Black-heeaded Gulls and 88 Little Terns.
There was some very light passage over both sea and land, 10 Manx Shearwaters, 40 Gannets, 17 Swallows, 151 Starlings and 2 Siskins the best of those.

Overnight petered out leaving showers til midday then becoming brighter with a brisk F5 westerly wind. Watches 0630-0800.
A Golden Oriole at the point sometimes showed quite well but mainly was typically elusive while an out of season Fieldfare was here also. There were still 2 Curlew Sandpipers on Kilnsea wetlands along with 156 Black-headed Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull.with an Arctic Skua, 15 Swifts and a Hobby flying south.

Rain petered out leaving sunny spells by the afternoon but rain returned late evening with a F5 north westerly. Watches 0620-1000.
The Turtle Dove still remained around the village and the 2 Curlew Sandpipers still on Kilnsea wetlands. The ponds area also had a Spoonbill which flew off south late afternoon, 20 Sandwich terns and a Little Gull while the Humber had 129 Sanderlings and 68 Dunlin.

A breezy day with a F5 north westerly along with sunny spells after some early showers and rain. Watches 0630-1000.
The Turtle Dove remained into its third day in Kilnsea while on Kilnsea wetlands 2 Curlew Sandpipers and 2 Spoonbills along with 28 Avocets, 2 Lapwings, a Little Gull and 2 Mediterranean Gulls while the only additional grounded migrants were a single Spotted Flycatcher and Siskin.
There was little on the move again the best being over the sea with the watchers just about rewarded with 265 Large Auk sp, 45 Manx Shearwaters and 31 Gannets.

Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.
A wet and windy start originally a F6 north westerly calmed down and dried up after midday, leaving sunny spells with showers never far away. Watches 0620-1000.
The Turtle Dove continued to entertain during the day and recieved plenty of admirers while in the late afternoon a Bee-eater initially lingered then flew off high south and the first rush of 500 Swifts flew south. The day also saw the Spoonbill, single Wood Sandpiper and 3 Curlew Sandpipers, 3 Mediterranean Gulls and single Little Gull still on Kilnsea wetlands with 123 Little Terns nearby on beacon ponds.
Some movement again with 32 Canada Geese, 32 Canada Geese, 5 Teal, a Velvet Scoter, an Arctic Skua, 4 Manx Shearwaters, 16 Swallows and 68 Starlings on top of the Swift movement.

Mostly sunny with the odd shower sometimes heavy with light south westerly winds. Watches 0600-0900.
The theme of scracities continues with a typically skulking but regaularly vocal Nightingale at Sammys and an equally skulking Common Rosefinch in Easington while maybe the biggest pull of the day a lingering singing Turtle Dove doing the rounds of Kilnsea. Other noteable birds included a Wood Sandpiper and 3 Curlew Sandpipers on Kilnsea wetlands where a Spoonbill was present early morning. While there was little moving a Jay and a flock of 30 Long-tailed Tits wandered the area.

Some sunny spells plus some showers with warm interludes driven by the F5 south westerly. Watches 0630-1130, 1400-1600.
The mini run of decent birds continues with today adding an Icterine Warbler to the yearlist singing at the point while both Red-rumped Swallow and Bee-eater flew south. Other bits on the move included a Goosander, 3 Lapwings, 11 Kittiwakes, 4 Jackdaws, 11 Swallows, 28 House Martins, 139 Starlings, a Grey Wagtail, 4 Chaffinch, 6 Goldfinch and a Siskin.
A small influx of migrants including the 'Icky' brought a nice mix with 2 Chiffchaffs, a Redwing, single Whinchat, a Wheatear and 3 Spotted Flycatchers around the area. The best of the wetlands was the Spoonbill still remaining.
Ringing 2 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Blackbird, 3/2 End of the Bio-blitz weekend, with a good weekend had by all.
