Saturday, 29 June 2024

Long sunny spells after showers in the morning and light variable winds.  The ponds area gain had most of the sightings this time with 5 Little-ringed Plovers, 12 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Common Sandpipers, 35 Redshanks, 89 Dunlin and 6 Mediterranean Gulls plus 55 Little Gulls on the Humber. There was few birds on the move bar 1950 Swifts, 8 Black-tailed Godwits and 12 Redshank.

Polite reminder for all visitors: the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds is extremely vulnerable to disturbance. PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY from the fenced area of beach, which is clearly signposted, and respect the wardens on duty. Up to 150 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

Sunny spells and cloud with a blustery F7 westerly.  The Kilnsea wetlands area had a brief Spoonbilll which then flew off south while also here 105 Black-tailed Godwits (then flew south), a Green Sandpiper, single Greenshank, 45 Black-headed Gulls, 5 Little Gulls, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 2 Common Terns and an Arctic Tern. 

Some light movement saw another 2308 Swifts head south plus single Golden Plover, 27 Curlews, 11 Redshanks, 3 Common Terns, 2 Arctic Skuas and 105 Starlings on top of those already mentioned.

Sunny to begin cloud building during the day the south west wind increasing from F2-6.   At last some conditions to get some mid summer movement underway. A very healthy 10292 Swifts flew south during the day the best for several years along with a Collared Dove, single Kestrel, 3 Hobbies, 34 Sand Martins, 6 Swallows, 357 Starlings, 6 Yellow Wagtails and a Grey Wagtail. The same conditions also saw some typically early Waders on the move among other species with 18 Shelducks, a Tufted Duck, 59 Common Scoters, a Lapwing, 7 Golden Plover, a Little-ringed Plover, 43 Curlews, 21 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Snipe, 13 Redshanks, 40 Black-headed Gulls, 35 Sandwich Terns, a Red-throated Diver, 12 Manx Shearwaters and a Shag.

Polite reminder for all visitors: the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds is extremely vulnerable to disturbance. PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY from the fenced area of beach, which is clearly signposted, and respect the wardens on duty. Up to 150 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

A overcast cloudy overast and misty day the day starting and ending with fog with an onshore wind.  The day saw some reasonable passage including 66 Teal, 99 Common Scoters, 28 Golden Plovers, 6 Curlews, 2 Redshanks, an Arctic Skua, 85 Gannets and a Shag while overland a Red Kite and 2 Buzzards. 

Again a busy ponds aarea delivered some good counts with 26 Avocets , 61 Curlews, 13 Redshanks, 55 Little Gulls, 3 Mediterranean Gulls, 2 Common Terns and an Arctic Tern. On the Humber a Brent Goose remained and 210 Common Scoters lingered.

Another nice sunny day with light south easterly winds the warm weather leading to fog by early evening.  Wader passage is slowly becoming more evident with each day passing, 3 Wood Sandpipers heading south todays standout sighting with also 47 Curlews, 7 Black-tailed Godwits, a Green Sandpiper and 6 Redshanks. 

The ponds area chipped in with most of todays other sightings including a Pintail, 18 Teal, 24 Avocets, 29 Little Gulls, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 29 Sandwich Terns, 3 Common Terns and 12 Little Egrets.

Up to 150 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

A nice warm day felt like the first proper day of the summer along with a light variable winds  A Marsh Warbler trapped at the Warren was the highlight of the day so late in the month while 1570 Starlings was a great count around the triangle. It was also eveident there were again some increases in Waders in the ponds area with 27 Curlews, 17 Black-tailed Godwits, a Curlew Sandpiper, 12 Sanderlings, 89 Dunlin and 7 Redshanks alomg with 22 Little Gulls and 3 Mediterranean Gulls.

It was a mixed bag for the vismiggers albeit light movement over sea and land the msot noteable being 16 Shelducks, 53 Common Scoters, 8 Curlews, 7 Black-tailed Godwits, a Green Sandpiper, 23 Kittiwakes, 2 Puffins, 26 Manx Shearwaters, 18 Gannets and 31 Sand Martins.

Polite reminder for all visitors: the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds is extremely vulnerable to disturbance. PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY from the fenced area of beach, which is clearly signposted, and respect the wardens on duty. Up to 150 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

A warm sunny day with blue skies and a moderate south westerly.  The first decent conditions resulted in some moderate southerly movement with the first push of 1330 Swifts along with 28 Black-tailed Godwits, a Hobby, 32 Sand Martins, 10 Swallows and 116 Starlings. Hopefully the conditions persist and we get some good Swift passage this summer.  

The ponds area had 3 Tufted Ducks, a Water Rail, 4 Redshank including the first returning juvenile, 13 Little Gulls, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 12 Sandwich Terns and 2 Common Terns. On the Humber a Brent Goose remained and around the area 4 Cuckoos were seen.

Another beautiful sunny day with a moderate south westerly. A quieter sea was again where most of the action was with 16 Teal, 2 Eider, 139 Common Scoter, 4 Curlews, 67 Kittiwakes, 6 Little Gulls onto Kilnsea wetlands. 8 Sandwich Terns, 5 Common Terns, a Puffin, single Red-throated Diver and 45 Gannets.  Overland 2 Crossbills heading north west over the Obs was the pick of the sightings. Full counts on Trektellen. 

Small increases in Wader numbers were evident among the early returning species bringing 6 Lapwings, 40 Golden Plovers and single Redshank to the Humber. No doubt by the end of the month the pace will increase somewhat.

PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY from the fenced area of beach, which is clearly signposted, and respect the wardens on duty. Up to 150 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

A nice day with plenty of sunshine and a modertae south easterly. Hopefully the end of the cold spell that has been so damaging to nesting birds.  The sea recieved a bit of attention sseing som edecent movement noteably 21 Shelducks, 8 Eider, 85 Common Scoters, a Red-throated Diver, 255 Kittiwakes, 2 Little Gulls, 25 Guillemots, 23 Razorbills, 11 Puffins, 29 Large Auks, 5 Fulmars, 23 Manx Shearwaters and 103 Gannets while overland 250 Swifts, a Marsh Harrier and 834 Starlings. 

Elsewhere a Willow Warbler was trapped in churchfield and 6 Shovelers, 8 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 7 Teal and 2 Common Terns in the ponds area.

A nice sunny day again along with a F3 north easterly.  There was no sign of the Shrike but a Willow Warbler in church field was interesting. Wader numbers were maybe slightly up with 9 Golden Plovers, 80 Grey Plovers, 31 Ringed Plovers, 8 Curlews and 60 Dunlins. Also of note was a Little Gull on beacon ponds. 

The best for the vismiggers were just 6 Eider and 425 Starlings.

Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

A sunny day with some cloud about and a F3 north westerly.  The late spring continues this time with a male Red-backed Shrike along the canal showing well. Typically there was little else bar a Wheatear in the triangle. 

Some light movement saw 9 Teal, 54 Swifts, 5 Curlews, an Arctic Skua and 108 Starlings the more noteable sightings.

A nice sunny day  with a moderate westerly.  The day was rather quiet albeit some decent summer movement with 25 Teal, 3 Tufted Ducks, 36 Common Scoters, 380 Swifts, a Redshank, single Red-throated Diver, 4 Manx Shearwaters, single Grey Heron, a Bee-eater, 4 Sand Martins, 11 Swallows and 187 House Martins. Full counts on Trektellen. 

It seemed there were already some returning Waders to the ponds area with Common Sandpiper and 3 Redshanks present while up at then gas terminal a late Spotted Flycatcher was present.

Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

Showers and sunny spells much milder than of late with a F3 south westerly.  It seems like Waders have only just left and some are returning already to the ponds area 2 Sanderlings, a Common Sandpiper and a single Redshank. Also in this area 5 Canada Geese, 11 Gadwalls, 3 Wigeon and 7 Teal were present. 

Small amounts of movement again with 6 Canada Geese, 107 Common Scoters, 322 Swifts, a Curlew, single Hobby, 3 Jackdaws,  3 Sand Martins, 21 Swallows, 19 House Martins and 155 Starlings.

Sunny spells and mild along with a F4 south westerly.  Small amounts of movement heading south saw 470 Swifts, a Hobby, 8 Sand Martins, 26 Swallows, 9 House Martins, 91 Starlings and 3 Linnets. 

A Cuckoo was in the triangle where a Green Sandpiper put in an appearance and 2 Water Rails along the canal.

A bright and mild start to the day clouding over with rain by early evening with a moderate south westerly.  A change in the conditions saw asome southerly movement mainly overland with 251 Swifts, 4 Lapwings, a Wood Sandpiper, single Greenshank, a Grey Heron, 2 Sand Martins, 65 Swallows, 24 House Martins, 89 Starlings, a Mistle Thrush, 4 Pied Wagtails, 9 Linnets and 9 Goldfinches. 

Other sightings included 22 Avocets and a Little Gull at Kilnsea wetlands and a Wheatear at the breach.

Cloudy again with a light north westerly.  Theer was no sign of the Shrike and the day had little different to previous day with even the sea much quieter. The sea still had 30 Kittiwakes, a Red-throated Diver, 31 Fulmars, 5 Manx Shearwaters and 135 Gannets. 

A Brent Goose still remained on Kilnsea wetlands the ponds area also hoting 5 Gadwall, 2 Teal, 15 Avocets, 2 Little-ringed Plovers, 8 Dunlins and a Common Tern.

Cloudy with the ood glimpse of sunshine and still a F4 north westrly persisted. The female Red-backed Shrike remained om Easington straight with also 3 Cuckoos on the triangle to sammys point area, a Corn Bunting wandering the area and a Marrsh Harrier flew south. 

The sea again was the best spot with 4 Eiders, 101 Common Scoters, 62 Kittiwakes, 9 Sandwich Terns, 81 Guillemots,86 Razorbills, 306 Large Auk sps, 20 Puffins, 2 Red=throated Divers, a Great Northen Diver, 54 Fulmars, 16 Manx Shearwaters and 68 Gannets.

Polite reminder for all visitors: the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds is extremely vulnerable to disturbance. PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY from the fenced area of beach, which is clearly signposted, and respect the wardens on duty. Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

Heavy over night rain until mod morning remaining showery but becoming brighter and a cool F4 north westerly again.  The female Red-backed Shrike remained on Easington straight but the only other migrant was a Wheatear in the triangle. 

The sea was busy in productive conditions counts of 113 Common Scoters, 262 Kittiwakes, 3 Arctic Terns, an Arctic Skua, 157 Guillemots, 38 Razorbills, 579 Large Auk sps, 16 Puffins, 76 Fulmars, 82 Manx Shearwaters and 136 Gannets. 

Webs count. Ringing: Starling 1 1/1. Watches: 06:15-11:45, 12:45-13:45, 15:00-16:00, 18:15-20:30

A damp overcast day some showers in the afternoon and a F4 north westerly remained.  A female Red-backed Shrike along Easington straight was a good find interestingly appearing to have only one functioning eye. Heading south were 11 Canada Geese and 2 Barnacle Geese, 21 Swifts, a Common Buzzard, 18 Swallows and 292 Starlings among small numbers of other species with also 10 Manx Shearwaters heading north.

Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

Overcast with rain early morning brightening during the day to leave sunny mild conditions with a light north westerly.  Not a lot of interest despite plenty of observers out looking with just 3 Canada Geese, 3 Teal and 2 Little-ringed Plovers on Kilnsea wetlands with 15 Avocets and an Arctic Tern on beacon ponds.

Dry and overcast the sun beaking through later along with a moderate westerly.  The male Red-backed Shrike remained giving good views on beacon lane along with the Long-eared Owl still hunting along the canal bank. An Osprey in/off the sea continuing west gave the Little Terns a startle but a surprise 2cy male Montagu's Harrier wandered the triangle then flew south down the peninsula.

Some light movement again over land and sea brought 4 Canada Geese, 39 Common Scoter, single Red-throated Diver, 399 Swifts, 78 Kittiwakes, an Arctic Skua, 2 Manx Shearwaters, a Shag, 3 Grey Herons, 39 Swallows, 14 House Martins, 56 Starlings and a Flava Wagtail.

Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

Generally sunny again with a moderate westerly.  In a record spring it was nice to get another male Red-backed Shrike this time along beacon lane giving great views. There were a few extra migrants around noteably 2 Long-eared Owls, 4 Cuckoos, a Spotted Flycatcher and single Whreatear. 

Some light movement saw 9 Canada Geese and an Osprey fly north and 10 Swifts, 3 Shags, 7 Grey Herons, 2 Little Egrets, a Marsh Harrier, 2 Kestrels, 7 Jackdaws, 34 Swallows, 7 House Martins, 93 Starlings and 2 Siskins head south.

Long sunny spells but showers in the afternoon with a cool F6 westerly.  There was very little of interest during the day mainly birds on the move with 49 Swifts, 44 Kittiwakes, a Puffin, 6 Fulmars, 2 Manx Shearwaters, 2 Grey Herons, 27 Swallows and 41 House Martins.

The best of the rest were 2 Little-ringed Plovers, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Arctic Terns, a Little Gull and a Wheatear mainly around Kilnsea wetlands.

Another cool cloudy day with a contintuing north westerly.  A Bee-eater added some colour to a dull cold day flying over Kilnsea wetlands lingering for a while along Easington straight then flew north west. There were also some other movement  with 139 Swifts, 4 Grey Herons, 8 Jackdaws, 2 Sand Martins, 50 Swallows, 16 House Martins and 2 Siskins.

A largely cloudy day with a cool F4 north westerly.  A surprise singing Icterine Warbler gave obsevers the runaround as it wandered Kilnsea before settling in the churchyard but apart from 3 Spotted Flycatchers there was little else for grounded migrants. 

Other noteable sightings included 3 Wigeon, a Pintail, 2 Teal, 2 Little-ringed Plovers, a Common Tern and 124 Little Terns were around the ponds area and a Greenshank on long bank marsh.

Up to 130 birds are present in the colony and can be viewed well from the flood bank.

A nice warm sunny day after a cool start with a F3 south easterly.  An escaped Rose-coloured Starling was around Sykes and the caravan site but in any normal year a bird turning up in early June would seem predictable with influxes to the UK more regular. On closer inspection when trapped, showed it to have a closed aviculture ring on it and therefore an escape. Grounded migrants were represented by a Willow Warbler, 2 Redwings, 3 Spotted Flycatchers and a Bullfinch. 

The sea was somewhat quieter with 113 Kittiwakes, a Great Northern Diver, 2 Red-throated Divers, 27 Fulmars and 100 Gannets. The reduction in the wind and sunny day encouarged some overland movement with Marsh Harrier, single Red Kite, 4 Jackdaws, 4 Rooks, 163 Swallows, 51 House Martins, 13 Chaffinches and a Corn Bunting

Overcast with occasional drizzle brightening by early evening with a brisk F6 northerly keeping it fresh.  A busy all day session over the sea saw some brilliant totals returned with 2 Eiders, 624 Kittiwakes, a Little Gull, 11 Sandwich Terns, 7 Arctic Terns, an adult Long-tailed Skua, 683 Guillemots, 310 Razorbills, 603 Large Auk sp, 19 Puffins, 10 Red-throated Divers, 6 Great Northen Divers, a Black-throated Diver, 17 Manx Shearwaters, 502 Fulmars and 301 Gannets.

A drake Garganey on Kilnsea wetlands and a 2cy Hen Harrier heading south were the best of the other sightings along with 4 Cuckoos, 2 Little-ringed Plovers on beacon ponds and a Spotted Flycatcher at the warren.
