Friday, 31 January 2025

A dull and damp day with light north westerly wind. Watches 0730-0900, 1415-1530.  The first day of the month was pretty much a repeat of the last week of January with the Tundra Bean Goose and 9 White-fronted Geese still present along with 28 Pink-footed Geese and 110 Greylag Geese near the football pitch in Easington with 2 Chiffchaffs around the sewage works. The ponds area had 9 Shovelers, 7 Gadwalls, 615 Wigeon, 221 Teal and 2 Goldeneyes. A good total of 110 Black-tailed Godwits were in the triangle, with a Cetti's Warbler around canal scrape.

A nice cold frosty winters day with plenty of sunshine and a light wind. Watches 0800-1000.  Yet again little change the Goose flock still being the best of the sightings with the Tundra Bean Goose and 9 White-fronted Geese still lingering on Easington straight. Elsewhere 4 Water Rails, a Woodcock and Cetti's Warbler in the triangle,

A chill in the air throughout the day with bright spells and a F3 north westerly. Watches 0730-1000.  Wildfowl continued to dominate the Tundra Bean Goose and 6 White-fronted Geese wandering between well field and peter lane with 62 Pink-footed Geese, 540 Brent Geese and 27 Mute Swans on Easington straight, 128 Greylag Geese in the triangle and kilnsea wetlands where there was also 9 Shovelers, 2 Gadwalls, 132 Wigeon, 164 Teal and 2 Goldeneyes.

Tuesday, 28 January 2025

Rain most of the night and morning brightened up in the afternoon with a decreasing F5 north westerly wind. Watches 0730-1000.  The Tundra Bean Goose and 5 White-fronted Geese remained on peter lane. Over the sea the best were 45 Wigeons, 3 Teal, 2 Eiders and a Goldeneye.

Monday, 27 January 2025

A wet and windy day with the blustery F7 south westerly made for difficult birding conditions the day seeing little change again the usual Tundra Bean Goose and 6 White-fronted Goose were still present on peter lane while 4 Shovelers, 285 Wigeon, 28 Mallard, 106 Teal and 2 Goldeneyes were in the ponds area.

Over the sea 2 Pintails and 335 Red-throated Divers were the best of very little.

Sunday, 26 January 2025

The cloudy day saw an increasing F3-F8 south westerly with rain by late afternoon. Watches 0730-1000.  There was little chage during the day but the Tundra Bean Goose with 6 White-fronted Geese among 33 Pink-footed Geese remained on peter lane. Otherwise the sea had the best of the other sightings with 13 Teal, an Eider, 39 Common Scoters and 405 Red-throated Divers.

After a light overnight frost he day was cold despite plenty of sunshine with a much decreased F3 south westerly blowing.  The Tundra Bean Goose was still present along with 6 White-fronted Geese and 33 Pink-footed Geese mobile between peter lane and the traingle. Nearby a Snow Bunting was at Easington lagoons, the ponds area holding 2 Shovelers, a Gadwall, 320 Wigeon, 2 Pintails, 130 Teals and 3 Goldeneyes with upto 700 Brent Geese plus the leucistic bird still present on Easington straight.

Storm Eowyn today not as bad as some parts of the uk but some rain and strong F8 south westerly winds sunnier later on.  Watches 0730-1000.  Presumably the Tundra Bean Goose made a re-appearance in the Goose flock on peter lane along with 6 White-fronted Geese and 33 Pink-footed Geese. Other than these 500 Brent Geese around kilnsea wetlands and a Kingfisher on peter lane were the best of the rest.

A change in the weather but still a cloudy and dull day but with an increasing F4 south westerly wind. Watches 0730-1000.  There were still 5 White-fronted Geese on Easington straight with 33 Pink-footed Geese while Wildfowl made up the bulk of todays sightings including 250 Brent Geese, 26 Mute Swans, 2 Shovelers and 230 Wigeon in the ponds area and 84 Pintails off Sammys. Elsewhere a Great Crested Grebe flew south offshore.

A cloudy dull day the odd glimpse of the sun and light winds again. Watches 0730-1000. JUst about the only sightings of mention were 15 White-fronted Geese on Easington straight with also a Pale-bellied Brent on Kilnsea wetlands with 350 Brent Geese.

A dull cloudy windless day with a light overnight frost.  Watches 0730-1000, 1500-1525. No sign of the Bean Goose and few other sightings of note with 2 Water Rails, 2 Woodcocks and a Cetti's Warbler around the canal and 2 Eiders over the sea.

Monday, 20 January 2025

Overcast like previous days with some light showers and light south westerly winds.  A Tundra Bean Goose was the highlight of the day lingering in the triangle with a Barnacle Goose among the Greylag Geese and Wigeons in walker butts.  Some light movement over the sea brought a Wigeon, 16 Teal, 15 Common Scoters, 2 Goldeneyes and 86 Red-throated Divers.

Another dull day with light south westerly winds and starting with an overnight frost.  Not a lot to report with maybe 62 Red-throated Divers over the sea, 2 Water Rails (sykes field, hillrise) and a Barn Owl worthy of mention.

A repeat of previous days frost in the morning remaining dull and overcast and cold in the light winds.  Counts from the ponds area returned 540 Brent Geese, 112 Greylag Geese, 228 Wigeon, a Pintail, 134 Teal, 2 Goldeneyes, 13 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Jack Snipes and 2 Stonechats with also 2 Chiffchaffs at the sewage works.

The day started with a frost but overcast and cold throughout the day with a light south westerly persisting. There was little of note with just 22 Pink-footed Geese, 6 Wigeon and 62 Red-throated Divers over the sea and 2 Goldeneyes and a Pintail around the ponds area.

Another heavy overnigtt frost followed by blue skies and a nice sunny day again with light south westerlies.  Spme noteable Wildfowl movement over the sea brought 121 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Shovelers, 129 Wigeons, 2 Pintails, 2 Teal, 3 Common Scoters and 113 Red-throated Divers. 

Other sightings saw a Pochard on the wetlands, 131 Black-tailed Godwits on the Humber and a Short-eared Owl and Cetti's Warbler along the canal.

A mostly cloudy day for arriving in the afternoon with a light south westerly.  The best of the day were 65 Pink-footed Geese, 16 Shovelers, 539 Wigeon and 105 Teal in the ponds area in a day of few sightings.

Tuesday, 14 January 2025

A mild bright day with patches of cloud and a moderate westerly. Watches: 0730-1000.  The 7 Lesser White-fronted Geese remained in well field till mid morning then flew high south over the Humber. The numbers of other Wildfowl were slightly down but there were still 460 Brent Geese, a Pale-bellied Brent, 224 Wigeon, 112 Teal and 2 Pochards. Also present 20 Little Grebes, 77 Lapwings,  74 Black-tailed Godwits and 3 Short-eared Owls. 

Over the sea 43 Pink-footed Geese, 4 Eiders, a Goldeneye and a 117 Red-throated Divers were the most noteable.

Monday, 13 January 2025

After a frosty start the day was somewhat milder than of late as it clouded over with an increasing F4 south westerly. Watches 0730-1000, 1020-1230.  The 7 Lesser White-fronted Geese which have been at Flamborough decided it was time to grace the Spurn area with their presence lingering in the Holderness and Well fields showing well. Wildfowl made up the best of the other sightings with 360 Brent Geese, 2 Pale-bellied Brents, 573 Wigeon, 177 Teal, 68 Mallards and 25 Little Grebes while moving over the sea 21 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Shovlers, 5 Wigeon, 51 Teal, 2 Tufted Ducks, 6 Eiders, 12 Knot, 40 Large Auk sp, 30 Guillemots64 Red-throated Divers and 3 Gannets.

A cold bright start clouded over to a milder day with a light south westerly. Watches 0730-1000.  A quieter day did see some good counts with 47 Mute Swans and 29 Little Grebes along with 110 Greylag Geese, 450 Brent Geese, 386 Wigeon, 118 Teal, 2 Woodcosk and a Marsh Harrier.

Another heavy frost to start along with freezing rain then long sunny spells with the light cool F2 north westerly. Watches 0730-1000.  A Lapland Bunting which flew north was the best of the sightings plus 750 Brent Geese, a Jack Snipe, 2 Woodcocks, 6 Short-eared Owls and a Cetti's Warbler.

A hard overnight frost gave way to a nice sunny day albeit cold in the light north westerly. Watches 0730-1200.  Highlights from the day saw a Hawfinch in Kilnsea which flew off south and 5 Ruddy Shelducks blogging around the area. Also of note 603 Brent Geese, 471 Wigeon, 2 Goldeneyes, a Jack Snipe and a Cetti's Warbler. 

A quiet sea saw 4 Tufted Ducks and 86 Red-0throated Divers.

A cold frosty day with light winds but bright and sunny pleasant in sheltered spots. Watches 0730-1000.  Not much change there were still 5 Pale-bellied Brents with 656 Brent Geese on Easington straight, 3 Woodcocks in the triangle and a Cetti's Warbler in the triangle.

A cold and calm day starting off sunny but clouding over early afternoon.  The best of the days sightings saw 6 Pale-bellied Brents with 550 Brent Geese on Easington straight, 70 Common Scoters on the Humber, 3 Water Rails in the triangle, 2 Woodcocks in church field, 400 Black-tailed Godwits on the Humber (1200 just outside area), 2 Cetti's Warblers along the canal and a Mistle Thrush singing in Easington.

A bright start clouded over soon after along with a continued F4 north westerly. Watches 0730-1000.  The Pale-bellied Brent was still around Kilnsea wetlands with a Mediterranean Gull and 11 Red-legged Partridges of note around here also. Other noteable sightings included 2400 Oystercatchers at chalk bank, a Woodcock along the peninsula, 5 Little Egrets in the area and a Bullfinch in Easington.

Monday, 06 January 2025

A cloudy wet day with rain throughout and a strong F6 north westerly.  Some interest over the sea saw 16 Common Scoters, 11 Kittiwakes, 59 Large Auk sp, 9 Red-throated Divers, 25 Fulmars and 5 Gannets recorded. 

A Pale-bellied Brent remained among the 300 strong Brent flock while there are now 422 Wigeon along with a Goldeneye, 40 Lapwings and 35 Black-tailed Godwits in the ponds area with a Woodcock in the chirchfield area.

A cloudy wet and windy day with a cold F4 easterly. Watch times 10:30-12:00.  Very little seen today in the poor conditions with 168 Greylag Geese the stand out count.

After some early showers it was largely dry and cloudy with a cold F4 westerly.  The MICHAEL CLEGG MEMORIAL BIRD RACE saw 5 teams out and about the Spurn area on foot and on bikes. THe best of the sightings accumulated throughout the day were a drake Goosander flying north, 6 Goldeneyes, 3 Gadwalls, 60 Common scoter on the Humber, a Jack Snipe in north field, single Greenshank on the Humber, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, a Short-eared Owl, single Kingfisher, a Cetti's Warbler along the canal, 15 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Chiffchaffs at the sewage works, 6 Stonechats and a Grey Wagtail.  Just out side the area a Lapland Bunting continued to delight on the new alignment.

A sunny cloudless day but with a cold F4 north westerly.  There was a good selction of birds yet again around the ponds area the best being a juvenile Glaucous Gull which then flew south plus 347 Wigeon, 49 Mallard, a Pochard, 140 Teal, 2 Tufted Ducks, 3 Goldeneyes, 12 Little Grebes, a Little Owl, single Short-eared Owl and a Mediterranean Gull. Around the triangle there were 3 Water Rails, 2 Woodcocks and a Buzzard. 

The sea was quiet with 89 Red-throated Divers being the best

A cold and heavy frosty start to the day never realy went away despite blue skies with a cold F4 north westerly blowing.  With the sea being rather quiet it was around the ponds area that delivered most of the days sightings with 300 Brent Geese, 28 Mute Swans, 5 Shovelers, 3 Gadwalls, 240 Wigeons, a Pintail, 150 Teal, a Pochard, single Tufted Duck, 3 Goldeneyes, 14 Little Grebes, 57 Lapwings, 53 Black-tailed Godwits, a Mediterranean Gull, single Little Owl and a Short-eared Owl. Other sightings included 4 Stonechats and a Woodcock around the area.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM EVERYONE AT SPURN

A wet start slowy cleared but generally remained cloudy with the odd glimpse of sunshine while a brisk F7 westerly ensured a windy start to the year.  Watch times: 07:30-10:00.  As would be expected there were a few people out looking for a good start to the year the best being 2 Velvet Scoters, a Red-breasted Merganser 32 Red-throated Divers and 12 Gannets over the sea the ponds area chipping in with 232 Wigeon, 3 Gadwalls, 4 Pochards, a Tufted Duck, 3 Goldeneyes, 40 Lapwings, 66 Black-tailed Godwits and a Common Buzzard. The Cetti's Warbler remained along the canal and a Woodcock was in churchfield.
