We kicked off our first Winter Work Party of the 2025/26 season last weekend. An intrepid crew braved the cold and wet, soon discovering that nothing warms you up quite like habitat management work!
Cutting took place in Churchfield and there was a role for everyone – sawing, lopping, clipping, or tending the bonfire. Whatever your strength, experience, or stamina, there was a way to get stuck in.

After a couple of hours of graft, punctuated by good chats and plenty of laughter, we headed back to the warm observatory for a well-earned brunch — a lovely spread prepared by our Warden. Once we’d refuelled (but before we got too cosy), it was back out for a final push. Then volunteers were free to enjoy an afternoon birding at Spurn or retreating for hot tea and a warm shower.
All the while, everyone knew they were making a big difference to the habitat work we can achieve – essential for keeping our land in prime condition for wildlife and monitoring. Your efforts help both the charity and the wildlife that live at – or pass through – Spurn. We’re incredibly grateful. Thank you to everyone who came out: it was great fun, great food, and great to be outside making a difference.
If you’d like to join one of our upcoming Winter Work Parties, we’d love to welcome you. There’s a task for everyone, whatever your ability, and volunteers can secure a free bed at the observatory on Friday and Saturday nights, plus a complimentary brunch.
