Position: Spurn Bird Observatory Residential Spring Volunteer

Duration: Spring season – 17 March to 11 June 2026
Role Overview
Residential Spring Volunteers play a vital role in supporting the daily operations and activities at Spurn Bird Observatory during the vibrant spring season. Volunteers will have the chance to immerse themselves in the area’s rich biodiversity while contributing to a range of conservation and observatory tasks. These include daily point count surveys, Breeding Bird Surveys, Wetland Bird Surveys, practical maintenance of the Observatory accommodation and upkeep of our assets.
Key Responsibilities
Assisting with bird surveys, observation and data collection during the spring migration period, with a focus on conducting daily point count surveys.
Participating in habitat maintenance, including pathway upkeep and habitat restoration projects.
Engaging with visitors and providing information about the Observatory, its mission and the importance of conservation.
Assisting with maintenance and cleaning of Observatory facilities, accommodation and grounds to ensure a welcoming and functional environment for guests and researchers.
Supporting educational programmes or events such as guided walks and sharing knowledge about local bird species and conservation work.
Requirements
A passion for wildlife conservation and a keen interest in ornithology.
Strong bird identification skills by sight and sound — essential for daily survey work.
Ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions and across varied terrain.
Good communication skills and a friendly, approachable manner.
Willingness to learn and follow survey protocols and conservation practices.
Flexibility to work within a small team environment.
A positive, proactive, can-do attitude.
