Spurn Bird Observatory, located just north of Spurn Point, is dedicated to monitoring and conserving bird populations, providing education, and encouraging a deeper appreciation of birds and their habitats.
We are seeking an experienced and committed individual to lead the protection and monitoring of the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds. This is a lead role with responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Little Tern protection programme, safeguarding this key breeding species alongside other beach-nesting shorebirds.
This role is made possible with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.
Conservation Leadership
Lead efforts to protect and enhance the breeding success of the Little Tern colony and other beach-nesting species.
Develop and implement strategies to minimise disturbance and predation.
Nest Monitoring
Track and record nest locations, incubation progress and chick development.
Maintain detailed records of productivity and significant observations for all species using the colony.
Predator Management
Implement non-lethal predator control measures such as exclusion fencing, decoys and deterrents.
Install, maintain and monitor electric fencing around nesting areas.
Visitor Engagement
Engage with visitors to explain the importance of the Little Tern colony.
Promote responsible behaviour and respond to wildlife-related queries.
Data Collection and Reporting
Monitor population trends and breeding outcomes.
Complete the annual Little Tern report, documenting findings and conservation outcomes.
Volunteer Supervision
Train, coordinate and supervise volunteers supporting monitoring and protection work.
Ensure volunteers are supported, briefed and working safely.
Health and Safety
Follow health and safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for staff, volunteers and visitors.
The role involves long hours, night-time work and periods of lone working, typical of seasonal coastal fieldwork.
Work takes place outdoors in all weather conditions.
The role includes regular physical tasks such as installing and maintaining electric fencing.
Proven experience in bird monitoring, conservation or research, ideally with shorebirds or seabirds.
Strong bird identification skills, particularly Little Terns and associated species.
Good knowledge of Little Tern ecology, behaviour and conservation challenges.
Experience managing volunteers and working as part of a small team.
Competence in data collection, analysis and report writing.
Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with the public.
Ability to work independently in a remote coastal environment.
A clear commitment to wildlife conservation.
