Spurn Bird Observatory is seeking two enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join the team as Little Tern Assistant Wardens. Working under the direction of the Head Little Tern Warden, you will support the daily protection and monitoring of Little Terns and other beach-nesting birds during the breeding season.
We are seeking two committed individuals to assist with the day-to-day protection and monitoring of the Little Tern colony at Beacon Ponds. The role supports the Head Little Tern Warden in delivering effective wardening and safeguarding Little Terns and other beach-nesting species throughout the breeding season.
This role is made possible with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.
Monitoring and Protection
Support daily monitoring of the Little Tern colony and other breeding species.
Help manage disturbance, deter predators and respond to emerging threats.
Nest Monitoring
Carry out regular nest checks from appropriate vantage points.
Record nesting success, chick development and fledging outcomes.
Public Engagement
Engage with visitors to explain Little Tern conservation and promote responsible behaviour.
Support education and informal engagement activities as required.
Habitat Management
Assist with habitat management, including vegetation control and preparation of nesting areas.
Maintain electric fencing and other protection measures.
Data Collection and Reporting
Accurately record field data and contribute to seasonal reporting.
Team Collaboration
Work closely with the Head Warden, staff and volunteers to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
Equipment and Site Maintenance
Assist with routine maintenance of equipment and infrastructure.
Report safety or maintenance issues promptly.
Health and Safety
Follow health and safety procedures at all times.
Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
The role will involve lone working, including night-time shifts.
Physical work including fence maintenance and equipment handling.
Strong interest in wildlife conservation, particularly birds.
Previous bird monitoring experience is desirable.
Basic bird identification skills and familiarity with survey methods.
Good observation, data recording and organisational skills.
Confident communicating with visitors and volunteers.
Physically fit and comfortable working long hours outdoors.
Reliable, self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
Position 1: 15 May to 15 August
Position 2: 1 June to 31 August
Both roles are full-time seasonal contracts of approximately 13 weeks, paid at the National Living Wage.
