We're hiring 2 seasonal Little Tern Assistant Wardens to join the team in 2025.

We are seeking two dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Little Tern Assistant Wardens. You will play a key role in conserving and protecting little terns, a vulnerable seabird species, as well as other beach nesting birds during their breeding season. Working closely with the Warden, observatory staff and other stakeholders, you will support the daily management of the Little Tern Colony.

Job Summary

Spurn Bird Observatory seeks two dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Little Tern Assistant Wardens. You will play a key role in conserving and protecting little terns, a vulnerable seabird species, as well as other beach nesting birds during their breeding season. Working closely with the Warden, observatory staff and other stakeholders,  you will support the daily management of the Little Tern Colony.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Monitoring and Protection:

    • Conduct regular monitoring of the Little Tern Colony, observing breeding behaviour, population trends of all species present and habitat conditions.

    • Implement measures to prevent human disturbance, deter predators, and mitigate other threats.

  2. Nest Monitoring:

    • Perform daily nest checks, record nesting success, and track chick development (from vantage points).

    • Collect and manage data on breeding productivity, chick survival, and fledging success.

  3. Public Engagement:

    • Engage with visitors, providing information about little terns and their conservation.

    • Promote responsible behaviour around the colony and deliver educational talks or activities.

  4. Habitat Management:

    • Assist in habitat management, including invasive vegetation removal and maintaining suitable nesting areas.

    • Maintain electric fences to protect the colony from predators.

  5. Data Collection and Reporting:

    • Accurately record data and assist in preparing reports on breeding season outcomes, including population trends and productivity rates.

  6. Team Collaboration:

    • Work with the Warden, staff, and volunteers to ensure smooth operations and coordinated activities.

  7. Equipment and Site Maintenance:

    • Perform routine maintenance on equipment, infrastructure, and visitor facilities.

    • Report any maintenance or safety issues promptly.

  8. Health and Safety:

    • Follow health and safety guidelines, ensuring safe practices and a clean, organised work environment.

  9. Fieldwork and Lone Working:

    • Work outdoors in all weather conditions, often alone for extended periods, including during night hours as required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong interest in wildlife conservation, particularly birds, and knowledge of little tern ecology.

  • Previous bird monitoring experience, preferably in conservation or research, is desirable.

  • Basic bird identification skills and familiarity with ornithological survey methods.

  • Excellent observation, attention to detail, and data recording skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with visitors and volunteers.

  • Physical fitness to work outdoors in variable weather, including long hours and weekends.

  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently and as part of a team.

Duration and Remuneration

  • Position 1: 15th May to 15th August

  • Position 2: 1st June to 31st August

Both roles are full-time, with remuneration at the National Living Wage.
