Following on from such a disrupted spring season due to COVID, we have now pulled together an events programme to hopefully allow you to make the most of your autumn 2020 now that we can all get out and about more.
03 September 2020
Since the Observatory is unlikely to be able to open our accommodation fully, these events will also be a key source of income for the Obs’, so please help support us whilst also getting a lot back! Obviously, life is not totally back to normal and we are only running events to always be compliant with the latest Government COVID advice. Therefore, each event will require pre-booking (except for the ringing demonstrations) and numbers will be limited to five participants, plus leader, to allow for social distancing whilst on the guided walks etc.
Many thanks in advance for your patience and support.
Autumn Ringing Demonstrations 08:00 – 11:00 – Every Sunday from 6th September –8th November in SBOT’s Church Field. Free to attend.
We’ll hopefully show you migrant birds up close during the ringing process. Learn all about why we ring birds, how we do it and where ringing shows us these birds are going to and coming from. Just turn up in Church Field, and our warden Paul Collins will present outside the green ringing lab. We’re limiting ringing demonstrations to a max of six households at any one time. Please adhere to social distancing and no entry into the ringing lab is permitted. Enjoy learning more about the wonderful birds all around you. Donations welcomed to help support out work.
Guided Wader Walks – assorted dates and times – £15 per person for members of Friends of Spurn, £20 for non-members.
Are you puzzled by plovers and confused by calidrids? If so, then these walks will be perfect for you! We’ll explore the diversity of wading birds on the Humber Estuary, teaching you the basics of wader identification, some of the calls and when and where to look for them! With over 45 different wader species recorded at Spurn and regularly 24 or more species present in the area, there is no better place to get to grips with this unique family of birds. On the day hopefully we’ll see up to 20 different species of wader for us to focus on.
Dates and times:
8th September 08:00-11:00
10th September 09:30-12:30
12th September 11:30-14:30
PLEASE pre-book your attendance to ensure COVID compliance with numbers present on the walk by emailing friendsofspurn@hotmail.com.
Autumn Guided Walks 09:00 – 12:00 – £10 per person for members of Friends of Spurn, £15 for non-members.
Want a personal guide to show you all the exciting migrants that might be present or arriving around Spurn? This is the event for you! We’ll take you around the most popular locations within a mile or so of the Bird Observatory, calling into Church Field where you can see our Observatory Warden carrying out bird ringing if weather permits.
Our first guided walk will be on Saturday 5th September and thereafter every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6th September through to 8th November.
PLEASE pre-book your attendance to ensure COVID compliance (with numbers limited to five participants plus one leader) by emailing friendsofspurn@hotmail.com.
