We're pleased to announce the following guided walks and events in 2019, please see below for further detail and how to book.

12 February 2019

Spring Ringing Demonstrations 08:00 – 11:00 – Every Sunday from April 14th – Jun 2nd in SBOT’s Church Field.

Just turn up in Church Field and enjoy. All donations welcomed.

Spring Weekend Guided Walks 09:00 – 12:00 – Led by one of the observatory committee or regulars, covering the most popular locations within a mile or so of the bird observatory, including an opportunity to witness bird ringing. Seek out and be shown the best of what birds are around.

Sat 27th – Sun 28th April, Sat 4th – Sun 5th May, Sat 18th – Sun 19th May, Sat 25th – Sun 26th May, Sat 1st – Sun 2nd June.

Just turn up in the Observatory carpark at 9.00am - £10 per person.

Plant Walk with John Law

By popular demand! Join John on a laid back walk around Kilnsea and the Spurn Peninsula searching out the specialist plants of Spurn. Aimed at beginners with an interest in botany.

Just turn up in the Observatory carpark at 10.00am - £10 per person.

June 1st

Photography Workshop with Justin Carr

A 3-hour workshop starting at 9.00am looking at techniques to get the best out of either your camera or digi-scoping equipment. To book contact Jonnie Fisk on 01964 650479 - £20.00 per person.

August 3rd

Annual Friends of Spurn BBQ

An open invitation to All Friends of Spurn to join us for a big BBQ in the Observatory garden to say thank you for all of your support. Art auction, raffle, tombola and other games to take part in to raise a little money for SBOT. BBQ from around 6pm until late! BYO booze

August 4th

Spurn School of Birding: Basic Birding Skills workshop

A one-day workshop for beginners or those wanting to refresh their birding skills: friendly, fun, assumes no prior knowledge, no tests! Includes introductory presentation on top tips and ways to identify birds, field walks to put the theory into practice, observe bird ringing, see the Obs at work from the inside at a steady relaxed pace. Workshop notes to take away to help build on what you have learned. You'll wish you attended this one years ago!

August 24th

Wadertastic!

Are you puzzled by plovers and confused by calidrids?  If so, then this event led by Spurn birders will be perfect for you! Explore the diversity of wading birds the Humber Estuary, learn the basics of plumage identification, the characteristic calls and vocalisations, and when and where to look for them! With over 45 different wader species recorded at Spurn, including the first record of Stilt Sandpiper for Britain, there is no better place to get to grips with this unique family of birds. On the day there should be around 20 different species of wader for us to focus on, so you will take away a lot of new ornithological skills.

August 26th – 29th

Spurn Bird Observatory Ringing Experience

A four-day course aimed at BTO T or C ringing permit holders who wish to experience bird ringing at an active British Bird Observatory. Led by SBOT warden Paul Collins and his team, participants will be shown, and be able to take part in a variety of late summer ringing activities here on the Yorkshire east coast, including hopefully Swallow and Yellow Wagtail roosts, terns, waders and more. Brush up on your skills and learn some new ones! More information on the SBOT website.

Private Guided Tours are available from mid-August to mid-November at a time and date to suit you. Bespoke escorted tour especially for your own group. £30 for three hours for four persons or less. Additional guests £5 per head.
