The Little Tern is one of the UK’s rarest seabirds and has suffered large scale declines in the last 25 years. The population is under increasing pressure due to habitat loss, disturbance and predation. Beacon Ponds hosts Yorkshire’s only breeding colony of this species, despite being widely used by the general public. We are looking for volunteer wardens to help the seasonal wardening team monitor and protect the Little Tern colony this spring and summer.

You’ll be working as part of the Little Tern team here at Spurn and meet new people from a range of conservation backgrounds.
Being based at Spurn Bird Observatory means you’ll be spending time at one of the best locations for birding in the UK, and Little Tern wardens have a good track record for finding rare birds here! We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic, prepared for early starts and late finishes and physically fit for a moderate walk to the colony.
Applicants must be able to work outside alone in all weathers potentially for protracted periods of time, woth possible night shift work if required.
Own transport may be an advantage but is not essential.
The volunteer wardening season is from June – mid August. Longer volunteer residencies are preferred. Accommodation is provided at Spurn Bird Observatory free of charge.
