Spurn Bird Observatory Trust is offering a 12-month Conservation Internship based at the Observatory in Kilnsea on the Yorkshire coast.
This placement is designed to provide a full year’s experience of life at a bird observatory, supporting the monitoring of bird migration, practical conservation work and the day-to-day running of the Observatory.
We are particularly keen to support early career conservationists and ornithologists, but applications are welcome from anyone enthusiastic about birds and wildlife who would like to gain experience in the sector.
Founded in 1946, Spurn Bird Observatory is one of the UK’s most exciting bird migration hotspots, with a long history of bird monitoring, research and conservation.

These will include:
• Bird surveys and migration monitoring
• Conducting point count surveys in spring and autumn
• Habitat management and practical conservation work
• Supporting volunteers and helping with observatory activities
• Engaging with visitors and sharing Spurn’s wildlife
The role is varied and provides an opportunity to experience all aspects of observatory work across the seasons.
We are looking for someone who:
• Has an interest in birds and conservation
• Enjoys working outdoors in all weather
• Is reliable and willing to learn
• Can work both independently and as part of a small team
Applicants should have basic bird identification skills, particularly of common resident and migrant species, as the role will include point count surveys.
• Free accommodation at Kew Villa, Kilnsea
• £30 per week contribution towards living expenses
• Training opportunities to support career development
• Experience across monitoring, conservation and observatory work
• The chance to experience a full year of bird migration at Spurn
1st May 2026 – 30th April 2027
