31st December 2015 - Thursday

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND A BIRD FILLED 2016 TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AND EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN PART OF OUR GROWING SUCCESS THIS YEAR. WITHOUT THE VOLUNTEERS AND INPUT FROM SO MANY PEOPLE WE WOULDN'T BE WHERE WE ARE TODAY. THANK YOU.
Bright and sunny and an increasing force 3-4 SW wind.
Seawatch: 0800-1405.
Another day of movement of wildfowl and seabirds saw totals of 20 Wigeon, 51 Teal, 2 Pintail, 5 Eider, 24 Common Scoter, 2 Red breasted Merganser, 1 Goosander, 7 Red throated Diver, 1 Fulmar, 1 Cormorant, 25 Lapwing in/off, 3 Bonxie, 16 Little Gull, 26 Common Gull, 22 Great black backed Gull, 36 Herring Gull, 3 Kittiwake, 164 Auk sp, 27 Guillemot, 12 Razorbill.
2 Black Brant were again at long bank along with 4 Whooper Swan plus in area 14 Greylag Geese, 10 Teal, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Grey Partridge, 3 Meadow Pipit, 1 Blackcap, Siberian Chiff-chaff vicars lane and 8 Snow Bunting at the borrow pit.

30th December 2015 - Wednesday

Another wild day with rain by early afternoon and a strong force 6-8 SSW wind.
Seawatch: 0810-1115.
Another day of generally southerly movement with 10 Shelduck, 2 Gadwall, 15 Wigeon, 47 Teal, 11 Eider, 9 Common Scoter, 5 Red throated Diver, 1 Great crested Grebe, 1 Gannet, 2 Shag, 5 Lapwing, 9 Little Gull, 25 Great black backed Gull, 14 Kittiwake, 3 Auk sp.
In the area 4 Whooper Swan, 32 Greylag Geese, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 300 Common Gull, 1 Goldcrest and 13 Long tailed Tit.

29th December 2015 - Tuesday

Bright and sunny and an increasing force 3-4 SW wind.
Seawatch: 0800-1405.
Another day of movement of wildfowl and seabirds saw totals of 6 Pink footed Geese, 2 Brent Geese, 7 Shelduck, 23 Wigeon, 51 Teal, 4 Shoveler, 1 Tufted Duck, 10 Eider, 115 Common Scoter, 3 Velvet Scoter, 9 Goldeneye, 1 Red breasted Merganser, 1 Goosander, 25 Red throated Diver, 6 Great northern Diver, 18 Gannet, 3 Cormorant, 55 Shag, 3 Lapwing, 3 Knot, 3 Dunlin, 1 Bonxie, 3 Little Gull, 87 Common Gull, 7 Kittiwake, 1 Little Auk, 7 Auk sp and 2 Puffin.
The Black Brant and 4 Whooper Swan remained at long bank plus in area 1 Pink footed Goose, 1 pale-bellied Brent, 24 Greylag Geese, 2 Shoveler, 2 Goldeneye, Fieldfare, 11 Long tailed Tit, 1 Blackcap, 9 Linnet and 8 Snow Bunting at the narrows.

28th December 2015 - Monday

Mainly cloudy with the odd sunny and a force 3-4 SE wind.
Seawatch: 0815-1500.
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO TURNED UP TO HELP WITH THE WORK PARTY AT THARLSETHORPE THE NEW OBSERVATORY BUILDING.
A great winter movement of wildfowl and seabirds saw a winter record of 62 Shag fly south and gave totals of 24 Shelduck, 9 Wigeon, 269 Teal, 4 Mallard, 4 Pintail, 2 Shoveler, 2 Eider, 64 Common Scoter, 3 Velvet Scoter, 1 Goldeneye, 9 Red throated Diver, 23 Gannet, 2 Cormorant, 2 Lapwing, 1 Dunlin, 5 Bonxie, 1 Little Gull, 26 Herring Gull, 25 Kittiwake and 2 Auk sp.
The 4 Whooper Swan remained at long bank plus in area 26 Greylag Geese, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 8 Long tailed Tit and 3 Siskin flew south.

27th December 2015 - Sunday

Bright and sunny with some cloud late afternoon with a light force 1 SW
Seawatch: 0820-1020
A possible White-billed Diver flew south past the seawatch hut at 10.50 plus 4 Whooper Swan remained at long bank.
On the move was 6 Pink footed Geese, 51 Wigeon, 1 Gadwall, 4 Common Scoter, 27 Red throated Diver, 1 Great northern Diver, 10 Gannet, 1 Shag, 2 Bonxie, 74 Herring Gull, 22 Great black backed Gull and 2 Siskin.
In the area 24 Greylag Geese, 9 Teal, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Snipe, 1 Greenshank, 3 Short eared Owl, 2 Meadow Pipit, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Song Thrush, 4 Goldfinch and 6 Twite.

Ringing: 1 Blackbird, 2 House Sparrow

26th December 2015 - Saturday

Mostly cloudy but occasional rain showers with a strong force 5-6 W
Seawatch: 0820-1020
4 Whooper Swan remained at long bank.
On the move was 19 Red throated Diver, 2 Gannet, 1 Shag, 23 Herring Gull.
In the area 17 Greylag Geese, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Little Owl and 2 Chiff-chaff.

Bright and sunny to strart but heavy rain late morning clearing late afternoon up later with a strong force 5+ SSW-W wind.
Seawatch: 0830-1200.
1 Black Brant remained in Kilnsea plus 1 Whooper Swan at long bank.
On the move was 7 Teal, 2 Mallard, 17 Pintail, 7 Pochard, 13 Common Scoter, 2 Velvet Scoter, 8 Red throated Diver, 1 Gannet, 1 Oystercatcher, 6 Dunlin and 1 Little Gull.
In the area 32 Greylag Geese, 1 Greenshank, adult Mediterranean Gull and the Siberian Chiff chaff.

23rd December 2015 - Wednesday

It’s the time of year for giving...
And Spurn Bird Observatory needs all of those who can to give a hand on Monday the 28th December.
It’s a great excuse to avoid the in-laws and burn off some of that Christmas over-indulgence.
The more the merrier, and whether you can only afford an hour or two we welcome all the help we can get as we keep striving forward with work on our New Bird Observatory building.
Accommodation at the Warren is free for those willing to help and needing a bed, please contact us beforehand if you require a bed.

On the move was 15 Pink footed Geese, 15 Red throated Diver, 1 Gannet, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Turnstone, 1 Bonxie, 136 Herring Gull, 16 Great black backed Gull.
In the area 16 Greylag Geese, 1 Goldeneye, the Siberian Chiff chaff, 1 Goldcrest and 3 Siskin.

1 Black Brant remained in Kilnsea plus 1 Whooper Swan at long bank.
On the move was 8 Pink footed Geese, 10 Red throated Diver, 2 Gannet, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Turnstone, 1 Pomarine Skua, 1 Bonxie, 26 Herring Gull, 8 Great black backed Gull, 2 Auk sp.
In the area 32 Greylag Geese, 1 Goldeneye, the Siberian Chiff chaff plus 1 Chiff chaff, 9 Long tailed Tit and 5 Siskin.

21st December 2015 - Monday

A bright start soon clouded up with rain by midday and a strengthening force 4-6 south south-westerly. Seawatch: 08:15-11:15. Moving were 1 Shelduck, 2 Common Scoter, 19 Red-throated Diver, 16 Black-headed Gull, 177 Herring Gull, 2 Auk sp., 2 Guillemot and 6 Siskin. Present were 17 Greylag goose, 200 Wigeon, 6 Teal, 42 Mallard, 2 Goldeneye, 24 Lapwing, , 1 Snipe, 1 Greenshank, 2 Chiffchaff, 200 Starling, 12 Goldfinch and 12 Linnet.

20th December 2015 - Sunday

Mostly sunny with a force 4-5+ SW wind.
Seawatch: 0825-1125.
The 2 Black Brant were together in the Kilnsea area with 424 Brents and 2 Whooper Swan on canal scrape. Other bits of interest were 1 Greenshank, 32 Greylag Geese, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Great crested Grebe, 3 Mediterranean Gull, 1 Snipe, 2 Meadow Pipit, 1+ Song Thrush, 1 Redwing, 11 Goldfinch and 23 Linnet.
On the move 3 Shelduck, 11 Red throated Diver, 5 Gannet, 5 Cormorant, 1 Shag and 2 Kittiwake.

19th December 2015 - Saturday

Mostly cloudy all day with a force 4-5 SSW wind remaining very mild.
Seawatch: 0815-1115.
The 3 Whooper Swan and 1 Black Brant remained plus some other bits of interest in Long eared Owl on vicars lane, Greenshank Sammies Point, Lapland Bunting clubleys and 3 Mediterranean Gull beacon lagoons.
Also present 23 Greylag Geese, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Stonechat, 1 eastern type Chiff chaff vicars lane and 1 Goldcrest.
On the move 3 Common Scoter, 12 Red throated Diver, 2 Gannet, 17 Common Gull, 63 Herring Gull and 2 Auk sp.

18th December 2015 - Friday

A dull day with low cloud and rain late afternoon and a force 2 south-westerly. Moving were 156 Siskin the third highest winter count, 6 Teal, 1 Common Scoter, 20 Red-throated Diver, 3 Gannet, 76 Herring Gull, 7 Great Black-backed Gull, 1 Guillemot, 2 Rock Pipit, 8 Goldfinch and 5 Linnet. Present were 2 Whooper Swan, 75 Greylag Goose, 1 Pale-bellied Brent Goose, 5 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 3 Cormorant, 5 Little Egret, 1 Water Rail, 10 Lapwing, 32 Ringed Plover, 16 Black-tailed Godwit, 169 Curlew, 3 Skylark, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Stonechat, 20 Fieldfare, 6 Redwing, 1 Blackcap and 1 Chiffchaff.

Cloudy all day with an increasing force 3-4 south-westerly wind.
Numpties: 09:30 – 11:15. Moving were 60 Pink-footed Geese, 1 Wigeon, 1 Great Skua and 7 Siskin. Present were the Black Brant, 2 Whooper Swan, 17 Greylag Goose, 106 Wigeon, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Cormorant, 30 Lapwing, 1 Snipe, 9 Black-tailed Godwit, 250 Common Gull, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Chiffchaff, 7 Long-tailed Tits, 60 Starling, 9 Goldfinch and 22 Siskin.

Rain overnight stopped early morning, becoming bright but cloudy with a force 2-4 SW.
Numpties: 0845-1015.
Moving was 9 Shelduck, 10 Wigeon, 1 Gadwall, 14 Teal, 1 Eider, 2 Common Scoter and 3 Red throated Diver.
Present 3 Whooper Swan, 1 Woodcock, 16 Black tailed Godwit, Barn Owl, Short eared Owl, Grey Wagtail, 2 Chiff-chaff, 23 Linnet and 16 Twite.

A dark damp dreary day with some drizzle and a force 1-3 SE wind.
Seawatch/Numpties: 0815-1000.
A poor day generally but 1 Black Brant was on the Humber whilst the 3 Whooper Swan still near long bank. also present 24 Greylag Geese, 1 Snipe, 12 Black tailed Godwit, 4 Stonechat, 2 Fieldfare, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Redwing plus 3 Common scoter and 1 Siskin flew south.

Ringing: 4 Blackbird, 2 House Sparrow, 1 Tree Sparrow.

14th December 2015 - Monday

Dull and cloudy all day with a light force 1 E wind.
Seawatch: 0945-1430.
A good day for southerly duck movement with a record winter count of 36 Goldeneye plus 3 Shelduck, 42 Wigeon, 334 Teal, 3 Mallard, 4 Pintail, 1 Shoveler, 1 Pochard, 3 Tufted Duck, 5 Eider, 92 Common Scoter, 28 Red throated Diver, 1 Shag, 4 Gannet, 1 Bonxie and 18 Dunlin.
Present were 3 Whooper Swan, 20 Fieldfare and 1 Blackcap.

13th December 2015 - Sunday

A calm cloudy settled day with light rain/drizzle late evening.
Seawatch/Numpties: 0800-1000.
A nicer day allowed some decent birding to be done. The 2 adult Black Brant were again in Kilnsea with 140 Brents including the first Juvenile whilst 2 Whooper Swan at long bank. Birds seen at Spurn today were 33 Shelduck, 1 Merlin, 1 Peregrine, 15 Black tailed Godwit, 1 Short eared Owl, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Skylark, 2 Rock Pipit, 2 Stonechat, 2 Fieldfare, 4 Redwing, 4 Song Thrush, 1 female Blackcap at the warren, 1 Chiff chaff with 6 Long tailed Tit by the lighthouse, 9 Goldcrest, 36 Tree Sparrow, 3 Linnet, 11 Twite at the warren, 10 Snow Bunting at the narrows and 32 Reed Bunting.
A few bits on move were 1 Common Scoter, 6 Red throated diver, 2 Great northern Diver south over the warren onto the Humber, 1 Shag, 11 Kittiwake and 2 Siskin.
A dead Fin Whale was washed up on the beach at Chalk Bank and had apparently been washed up twice in last 2 weeks whilst in unwelcome visitor of Mink was seen at the Point.

12th December 2015 - Saturday

A chilly day began dry but heavy prolonged rain by mid morning for rest of day with a force 2 SW wind.
Seawatch 0930-1100.
very quite due to the weather but 2 Black Brant with 100 Brents again in fields in the Kilnsea village area plus 3 Whooper Swan at long bank.
Moving south were 13 Pink footed Geese, 1 Gannet and 1 Red throated Diver with 1 Rock Pipit by the crown and 8 Magpie.

11th December 2015 - Friday

Sunny periods with periods of cloud with rain with a force 3 SW wind.
Seawatch: 0730-1130.
On the move was 6 Gannet, 26 Red throated Diver, 1 Great northern Diver, 1 Shag, 1 Bonxie, 1 Eider, 1 Shelduck, 3 Common Scoter and 12 Siskin.
Present were 3 Whooper Swan, 1 Black Brant, 300 Brent Geese, 2 Mistle Thrush, and 1 Stonechat.

10th December 2015 - Thursday

Cloudy with rain until mid-day clearing up with sunny spells and a force 2 SW wind.
Seawatch 0815-1125.
On the move were 2 Gannet, 5 Red throated diver, 2 Wigeon, 25 Teal, 14 Common Scoter.
In the area 3 Whooper Swan, 9 Teal, 2 Moorhen, 1 Snipe, 1 Blackcap, 1 Treecreeper in Easington and a Barn Owl.
Of interest a Fulvous whistling Duck flew in/off the sea and landed on canal scrape.

A gusty day with sunny periods and a force 2-6 WSW wind.
Birds on the move were4 Pink footed Geese, 2 Wigeon, 14 Teal, 1 Pintail, 9 Common Scoter, 21 Red throated Diver, 7 Kittiwake, 1 Sandwich Tern, 9 Auk sp, 7 Goldfinch, 22 Siskin and 5 Snow Bunting.
The 3 Whooper Swan remained at long bank plus also in area 1 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Blackcap at Kew, 1 Chiff chaff and 7 Goldfinch.

Ringing: 1 Water Rail, 2 House Sparrow, 1 Goldfinch.

8th December 2015 - Tuesday

A bright start clouding up later with an increasing force 2-4 SW wind.
Seawatch/Numpties 0900-1130.
On the move was 11 Whooper Swan (seen earlier in day past Redcar), 30 Wigeon, 81 Teal, 10 Common Scoter, 12 Red throated Diver, 1 great crested Grebe, 6 goldfinch, 14 Siskin.
In the area the Black Brant and 3 Whooper Swan remained plus 7 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Redwing, 5 Chiff chaff, 1 Goldcrest, 7 Long-tailed tit, 3 Goldfinch.

On the move was 7 Pink-footed Geese, 11 Wigeon, 6 Teal, 5 Common Scoter, 1 Velvet Scoter, 7 Red throated Diver, 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Bonxie, 3 Waxwing, 1 Greenfinch, 1 Siskin, and 1 Linnet.
Present was the 3 Whooper Swan, 32 Lapwing, 1 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Meadow Pipit, 1 Chiff chaff, 3 Long tailed Tit, 9 Linnet and 8 Twite.

A windy start with a force 5-6 W wind veering NW and decreasing with some showers and sunny spells.
Seawatch: 0750-1115.
On the move was 1 Eider, 26 Red throated Diver, 1 Great crested Grebe, 1 Gannet and 9 Auk sp.
Present were the 3 Whooper Swan, 300 Wigeon, 2 Barn Owl, 6 Chiff chaff, 7 Goldfinch and 2 Siskin.

4 Blackbird, 1 Goldfinch.

5th December 2015 - Saturday

Cloudy with a few heavy showers and a gale force W wind.
Seawatch 0750-1200.
On the move was 12 Wigeon, 2 Common Scoter, 1 Velvet Scoter, 1 Goosander, 7 Red throated Diver, 1 Great crested Grebe, 2 Golden Plover in/off, 1 Curlew in, 1 Knot, 1 Purple Sandpiper and 7 auk sp.
In the area 1+ Black Brant with the Brent Goose flock, 3 Whooper Swan, 7 Black tailed Godwit and 1 Chiff chaff.

Bright and sunny to start with clouding up in the afternoon with a force 6-8+ SW wind.
Seawatch 0750-1000.
On the move was 5 Wigeon, 1 Common Scoter, 45 Red throated Diver, 3 Kittiwake, 14 Auk sp, 10 Goldfinch, 53 siskin and 1 Linnet.
Few bits in the area with now 2 Black Brant, 3 Whooper Swan, 26 Pink footed Geese, 1 Greenshank, 1 Goldeneye, 220 Curlew, 2 Meadow Pipit, 2 Fieldfare, 1 Redwing, 1 Chiff chaff and 4 Goldfinch.

A bright start clouding up late afternoon with a force 3-6 S wind.
Seawatch 0800-1015.
Poor over the sea with 8 Teal, 3 Red-throated Diver, 2 Gannet and 1 Guillemot.
In the area 1 Snipe, 1 Short-eared Owl, 2 Meadow Pipit, 1 Rock Pipit, 46 Fieldfare, 17 Redwing, 12 Goldcrest, 19 Linnet and 13 Reed Bunting.

Bright and sunny clouding up later with a force 4-5 SW wind.
Seawatch 0745-1100.
On the move were 56 Pink-footed Geese, 6 Wigeon, 5 Common Scoter, 22 Red-throated Diver, 1 Great Northern Diver, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Gannet, 1 Shag, 1 Little Gull, 188 Auk sp, 24 Guillemot, 2 Razorbill, 16 Goldfinch and 1 Siskin.
Present was the Whooper Swan, the adult Black Brant, 1 pale-bellied and 334 dark-bellied Brents, 1 Shoveler, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Water Rail, 1 Mistle Thrush and 1 Chiffchaff.

Ringing: 3 Blackbird.

Rain slowly petered out by mid morning with the odd sunny spell and a force2-4 SW wind.
Seawatch 0745-1015
The Whooper Swan remained at long bank, while on Kilnsea wetland 132 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 1 Shoveler, 2 Little Grebe plus 15 Beacon Ponds, 29 Lapwing, 8 Black-tailed Godwit and 5 Linnet.
Also in the area 2 Snipe, 1 Woodcock, 1 Song Thrush, 2 Mistle Thrush, 4 Brambling at sammies plus a Siskin and 5 Linet flew south. Over the sea 12 Red-throated Diver, 3 Gannet and 4 Guillemot were seen.

Ringing: 7 Blackbird, 1 Tree Sparrow, 1 House Sparrow, 1 Greenfinch, 1 Goldfinch.
